Study Abroad in Shanghai

Why Shanghai?

From the modern towering skyscrapers in Pudong to the colonial architecture of the Bund, this multi-faceted, vibrant city is an ideal study abroad location. Shanghai represents the modern Chinese drive toward industrialization and economic development. Situated at the mouth of the Yangtze River on the banks of the Huangpu, Shanghai was an early hub of trade with the West. It has since become a leading Asian metropolis. Shanghai also represents China's drive toward globalization and the impact of modernization on Chinese culture.

The IES Abroad Shanghai Summer Internship

The IES Abroad Shanghai Summer Internship Program is designed for students interested in spending 8 weeks participating in an academic internship in Shanghai while studying Chinese language. Offering opportunities at institutions such as international and domestic companies, Chinese think tanks, public media organizations, and NGOs the program, the program gives you the chance to gain international work experience and Chinese lanuguage proficiency through academic on the-job learning and complementary opportunities for improving language development.

Curriculum Highlights

  • 3 hours per week of an academic internship seminar, designed to maximize your international work experience
  • 28 hours per week of internship experience, available in such varied fields as: business, education, law, science, social work, media, environmental consulting, research and development, and NGOs
  • 8 hours per week fo Chinese language instruction, offered at three levels, including beginning .
Additional Highlights
  • An extraordinary 2-3-day field trip to Beijing
  • Housing with a fellow IES Abroad student or Chinese host family
