Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity that we hope you will inspire your student to participate in. Choosing to study abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences in their professional and personal college life. Students gain knowledge and become engaged into a culture that can't be taught in the classroom. It is our hope that you support your student in this once in a lifetime experience as they grow as an individual and become equipped to a lifestyle so different then their own.

Each program consists of specific guidelines and expectations, however we believe that you play a major role in this decision. We encourage you to talk to your student about these study abroad opportunities and to visit the links below for information and resources that will help transition this experience for you and your student. As your students participates in this life-changing experience, there are many ways to stay involved!

While we encourage you to assist with the logistics of the study abroad program arrangements, this process is also part of the learning experience for your son or daughter and they should take the lead in enabling the study abroad experience to occur.   We encourage you to visit the link below to help better assist you with this experience. If you need more information on programs or application materials, please do not hesitate to call the World: The David and Leighan Rinker Center for International Learning at (386) 822-8165.

The Parent/Family's Role in Study Abroad

Parents form an integral part of the study abroad experience by supporting their student's choice to embark on this academic and life-enriching endeavor.  Here are some specific ways to show support and be involved in the process:

  • Make sure your student's visa paperwork is in order.
  • Assist with flight arrangements.
  • Develop a plan for handling family emergencies that may arise while your student is abroad.
Besides reading through our website in its entirety, ask your student to review his or her Pre-Departure handbook and other materials which are available to them via our on-line system.  While Stetson cannot grant you access, many of the items can be printed out by students, so be sure you stay up-to-date with your student and the process.
