About Sharjah

The Emirate of Sharjah (population approximately 680,000) is located next to the Emirate of Dubai. It prides itself as the “cultural capital” of the UAE and offers a range of museums, traditional souks (markets), and theaters. Although Sharjah developed rapidly under British rule in the 19th century, it has maintained its traditional Muslim values while developing its regional trade relationships. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad al-Qassimi has ruled Sharjah since 1972. A mere 40 minutes from Dubai and its high-paced, cosmopolitan lifestyle, Sharjah provides a comfortable and relatively quiet environment for exploring Gulf culture.

Where You’ll Study

The American University of Sharjah was founded in 1997 and was designed to combine an American-style education with the traditional values and modern aspirations of the UAE and the Gulf region. The University enrolls approximately 5,200 students from 80 nations. Approximately 20 percent of the students are native Emirati, and more than 75 percent of the total student body is from Arab nations. The University faculty has been drawn from more than 45 countries. The campus includes 12 student residential halls as well as a large sports complex and a student center. Approximately 40 percent of the student body lives in campus housing.

Housing & Meals

Housing is included in the study abroad program fee. Students share double rooms in AUS on-campus residence halls. Residence hall facilities are gender segregated, although women and men may interact freely in most other buildings on campus. Most rooms include a small kitchenette and bathroom facilities. Each residence hall also offers shared kitchens, computer labs, exercise rooms, and other common rooms.

Meals are not included in the program fee and are the responsibility of the student. Meals may be prepared in the residence halls or taken at restaurants, cafeterias, and cafés on the AUS campus. There are several convenience stores and supermarkets on campus.

Academic Program

The Business, Engineering, Arts and Sciences study abroad program is designed to combine Arabic language and Middle Eastern and Gulf studies courses with electives in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, business, engineering, and other direct enrollment courses at the American University of Sharjah (AUS). Studying alongside students from various corners of the Arab World provides students with the opportunity to experience different perspectives and ideas within an academic environment and structure based on a U.S. university system. The AUS business, engineering, and architecture programs have U.S. accreditation. Most of the Arabic language courses are designed for non-native speakers and focus on Modern Standard Arabic.

Academic Culture

AUS offers students a U.S.-style education within a traditional Gulf environment. Courses include a combination of lecture, discussion, independent and group projects, and laboratory work. The average class size at AUS is approximately 24 students. Although many of the faculty have U.S. or Canadian citizenship and the University is designed to encourage lively discussion and scholarly debate, faculty and students are expected to demonstrate respect for traditional beliefs and religious values at all times.

Arabic language courses are offered at various levels, including a special set of courses for heritage speakers. With the exception of the language courses, almost all courses at the American University of Sharjah are taught in English.
